| Fishway at Turrella is nearing completion |
|
A fishway to allow native fish to move upstream from the estuarine section of Wolli Creek to the freshwater of the upper reaches is nearing completion. Although not a funded by the Cooks River Urban Water Initiative, this project is a fantastic example of the CMA, local community, DPI (fisheries) and councils on both sides of the Creek working together to improve habitat for native fish. Turrella Weir, at the end of Henderson Street, was a significant barrier to native fish such as Gudgeon, Galaxius and Mullet which move between salt and freshwater environments. The new fishway creates a series of pools so that native fish (who are notoriously poor swimmers) can make there way up a gentle slope step by step. Contractors at the site are currently putting the finishing touches on the rock-ramp fishway and the project should be completed by the end of February. |
