| COMPLETED Cooks River Icon Project - Improving Biodiversity in Streetscapes (Biodiversity) |
|
This project improved ecological and environmental quality in the urban landscape through the use of local native plant species in street and park plantings with a focus on biodiversity outcomes. Strathfield Council and University of Technology Sydney (UTS) undertook research for local trials of different urban trees. They then produced plant lists and information, developed and refined the decision support process, identified test planting sites and involved local communities in planting and maintenance of sites.
The project recognised that while there are a number of non native and non local native species that can be used in horticulture and that can benefit the environment, the intent was to concentrate on identifying and trialling local native species to improve local biodiversity. This complemented a range of other programs run through the Cooks River Foreshore Working Group (CRFWG) and the State Government.
Project Progress: Completed. Strathfield Council to extend the project on their own initiative.
