The focus of this project was on developing a strategic and consistent approach to the protection and management of coastal dune systems in the Sydney Metropolitan and Hawkesbury Nepean CMA areas.  

 

Activities included a review of current dune restoration management guidelines, the development of coastal dune management decision support tools, interpretative signage and awareness raising activities. On ground works were undertaken at Kurnell, Monterey , Brighton, Kyeemagh and Chinamans Beach . Overall 19 hectares of dunes were rehabilitated.

 

Project Progress: The project was completed in June 2008.

SMCMA Project: Dune Restoration


Coordinator/Project delivered by: Sydney Metropolitan Catchment Management Authority and NSW Department of Lands (Soil Conservation Service)

 

Project Partners: Hawkesbury Nepean CMA, Sydney Coastal Councils Group, Randwick, Sutherland, Pittwater, Warringah, Rockdale and Mosman Councils, Friends of Avalon Dunes and Department of Environment & Climate Change (National Parks and Wildlife Service) and Coasts Estuaries & Floodplains Branch

 

Funding Source: Australian Government National Heritage Trust (NHT)

 

Total funding amount (include in-kind contributions):  $250,000

 

Project timeframe: August 2006 to June 2008
