Project Description

Despite its urban context, the SMCMA area contains a wide variety  of natural environments from estuarine and wetland habitats, rugged sandstone environments and open forests and woodlands. These areas can contain significant biodiversity values and are highly valued by many of the catchment community. In some cases, particularly those areas within the national parks estate, the terrestrial fauna habitats are well known having been determined through extensive field surveys. This is not the case for other remnant areas where very little assessment has been carried out.

The principle activities for this project were:
* collation of existing data (primarily from survey results stored in the
Atlas of NSW Wildlife)
*
supplementary surveying of poorly surveyed areas (over 50 sites)
* ranking key remnant areas in terms of their overall fauna habitat value

The study primarily considered native vegetation within the SMCMA area that has not been significantly modified.

The outcomes of the project are:
* a report detailing the vertebrate fauna in remnant native vegetation across the SMCMA area
* short site profile reports detailing the value of each site for native fauna, corridor values and the major management issues and priorities for supported management.

Partners:  A Biodiversity Reference Group will oversee the project and will include representatives from SMCMA, DECC, other state Government agencies and local councils.
