Catchment Management Authorities (CMA) are the key delivery mechanism for Commonwealth and State Government investment to solve various land, water and native vegetation problems.

The Sydney Metropolitan CMA provides leadership on key natural resource management issues in the Sydney Harbour, Georges River, Botany Bay and Hacking River catchments. For example, the Water Sensitive Urban Design in Sydney Program and the Botany Bay Coastal Catchments Initiative build capacity and commitment at the local level to manage urban stormwater, rehabilitate degraded urban waterways and implement the Botany Bay Strategy.

The SMCMA partners with 39 local councils in the metropolitan catchment as well as State and Federal Government departments. Urban areas of Sydney north of Castle Hill and west of Blacktown and Campbelltown come under the Hawkesbury Nepean CMA.
