The many resource demands placed on this area adds to the complexity of natural resource management approaches and opportunities.

Significant improvement in the natural resource management (NRM) of this catchment cannot be achieved by on-ground action alone.  The SMCMA must work with the many stakeholders that plan for, and manage, the use of natural resources.  There are many issues that the SMCMA seeks to influence, in particular, the coordinated management of natural resources by existing land managers.  This influence will be directly supported by its ability to be an active partner in achieving real on-ground change. 

The SMCMA recognises the significant work by Local Government in the management of the natural landscape in their respective areas.  Council bushcare activities with community groups is making a significant difference to the quality of local bushland.  The value of the community time input to this was estimated at approximately $3.5M in 2005 alone.

The SMCMA regards that an informed community is best placed to manage their local environment.  This means the development of suitable community programs that include education, awareness and training.  These programs being operated by the various land managers and supporting agencies.  The SMCMA appreciates the various funding opportunities that have directly or indirectly allowed the programs to operate.
